WOMEN, KUMITE AND HISTORY

III SOLIDARITY KARATE MEETING VIA INSTAGRAM IVÁN LEAL✴️ Two hours live where I was able to learn first-hand about the history of women who, in addition to opening, once again, the way to those of now, are and will always be KUMITE WORLD CHAMPIONS from 1994 with a caveat, the first time in Spain …)

FIRST SPANISH KUMITE WORLD CHAMPIONS

Spectacular initiative because those who do not dedicate themselves to the competition or personally know these women, were able to put a face on them and tell them anecdotes themselves and train with them for a few minutes to realize that they are ALL very fit and for what reasons they were world champions …

Not only do they smell like karate, there are more things behind, what I call the “COMPLETE KARATEKA” … and it does not have to do with medals or competitions … (my opinion) …

Mujeres españolas – Campeonas del Mundo Kumite en 1994 Malasia y 2002 Madrid

In relation to their coaches, in addition to making pacts with the devil, architects of the above … What did they eat in those times? … Spectacular these people …

Congratulations for putting women’s sport (from previous generations) at the same VISIBILITY level as men’s… Everyone knows the names of Spanish world champions of kumite (and katas)… but… what about girls?….

FEMALE KARATE VISIBILITY

If we have made any progress, it is that now girls know each other as well, or even more, than boys. Much joy to see that components of the current national kumite team (Laura Palacio, Cris Ferrer …) were connected to learn from all that these karateka know.

My question is … Why are they not seen anymore? … Why are they not given the importance they have? … Unfortunately I think my answer would be somewhere in my post on Facebook last Sunday … Anyway …

In order of appearance, of everything they told and briefly what gave me time to write down and things that caught my attention:

KUMITE WORLD CHAMPIONS IN MALAYSIA 1994.

ROSA ORTEGA
She is the so-called “Great Captain” for her LEADERSHIP ability. He carried the Olympic torch in Granada.
His advice: “enjoy karate, train and if you are competitors who squeeze the most”
He says that perhaps he could have sought help to be more professional and that today they can live more of karate more than before …

Very interesting that whether you are a competitor or not, that you leave your life in each training session: “Championships are the result of daily training” …

He taught us several exercises to strengthen the CORE, especially based on isometrics (normal plank, with arms back, with rotations, lateral, support on the wall, holding a bottle …)

It is also important to work in instability for the best development of strength, as well as taking care of food, leading an active life and trying to do a little exercise, even for a little while, every day.
Amen to everything !! Ole her !!

From left to right: Rosa, Consuelo, Carmen, Antonio (coach) and Silvia – World Champions in Malaysia, 1994

MARI CARMEN “LA MAÑA”
“La maña” that same year was gold in individual and silver in an Open. Three finals with two golds and one silver.
It is characterized by its nobility, which we could see in its live show… Very salty !!
He told us about the importance of working control to the face …
He commented several times that “before it was another type of karate”, knowing how to hit and above all FIT. The strength was not only that of oneself, but they hurt themselves hitting you … “The karate of before”, our defenses had to be attacks.

You can be very fast but if nothing hits us and we wrinkle …

For that precision of work to the face, I work with a chain. She did it with a monkey wrench… See photos… The blows to the walls another story…
Hardening of the arms with a tonfa 🙂 And hitting yourself a little … Hardening is no longer done like this … “Karate from before” …
WE ARE LIONS OR MICE !!!!

SILVIA FAJARDO
Long live the Canary Islands !!! He told us a wonderful anecdote about his “mud training” in Malaysia … With those training it is impossible not to win the World Cup, hahahaha …
As a good Canary, her daughter trains with Javier Oran, in the end Karate does not understand generations …
With her, her daughter, we did some work to activate the defense. Simple but very effective … (knee, with stick …)

WE ARE LIONS OR MICE !!!

CONSUELO HERNÁNDEZ
They call her “The TBM” … When she started doing the exercise I began to understand the subject …
Apparently it comes from family … Everyone must work in Development … Gyako tsukis who make holes or break breasts …
A bit of a lack of audio but the images that looked tremendous for “long ago I do not wear the karategui” … Good Lord …

  • We advance, copies guard, gyaku tsuki …

ANTONIO MARTÍNEZ AMILLO, COACH
Another hand and World Champion as a competitor and as a Coach. He comments that in 1994 he lost years of life in Malaysia … especially in the semifinal …
Of him they said in the chat that “he has been and is the architect of Spanish karate” …

He showed us some very cool exercises (this man is at the top !!):

  1. Activate certain techniques with words (chair, radiator) …
Example: gyakotsuki if the word has an A and if it has two AAs on both sides …
Then with other techniques … mawashi if it has the letter “X”
Sweep and tsuki if it has the letter … “X”
  2. Dodge with the shoulder in three ways …

Complicated to keep up with him …

CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD OF KUMITE MADRID 2002.

NOELIA
This girl is a crack. That same year she was also a senior individual champion, then a European from Tallinn and later in November with the National team in Madrid.
His phrase is the key to everyone’s desire: “I die if I lose this occasion.” He made a hole in his work to be able to be live and after a while he went to work.
He performed with Marcos, his lifelong partner, another senior gold medal karateka in kumite, an activation job in kumite.
As Iván Leal commented, they are an example of “love and karate”. That “human part” that Karate also has … I’ll leave it there …

.

CRISTINA FEO
She is a super mom, “just born” – they said – who was in six finals of world championships in a row … Apparently she threw an hour and a half before each match warming up … 🙂
Interesting explanation of the hips when hitting a tsuki (formerly hip down and now hip forward-fly …).
He did a very cool job with Miguel, his partner, synchronizing two actions (mawashi front-back …), then a chair job (legs and anticipation) …

From left to right: Cristina, Estefanía, Noelia, Lino (coach) and Gloria – Kumite World Champions Madrid 2002

Curious what was said that girls are the ones who know previous generations of female karateka better … Boys less … Will they give more importance to the past to learn more …? Less individualistic? … I don’t know, but curious …

ESTEFANIA
Another Asturian but who lives in the Canary Islands … What will the islands have …
What a waste of energy, enthusiasm, positivity and strength.
He proposed some exercises with music in which he put his own voice. How cool and how cool.
Example: when the “gong” of the song changes the guard …
Motivation, karate and music … Good mix. Congratulations.

GLORIA
I don’t know what the Canary Islands have, again …
Interesting advice to use visualization before the competition … Interesting technique …
There was talk of a silver in Tokyo against Ayaka Saito that tasted like gold… Ay ay…
He taught us hip mobility jobs. A leg job (movement, change and hit) and a very fun game (crazy for the neuron). Another that is super in shape … The truth, it’s nice.

THE COMPLETE KARATE COMPETITOR

LINO GÓMEZ FEITO, COACH

He has been in six consecutive finals at World Championships … and considers them all, all special …
He wanted to remember many many people, but what surprised me the most was that he attached importance not only to coaches, technical directors, but also to doctors, physios … “HERE, NOBODY IS EXCEEDED, EVERYONE HAS TO ADD ..” … Good man, right ???… Could it be a “full karateka” ???? 🙂
They operated on his hip 4 months ago … but he taught us very quickly several exercises to change the guard (these people … what pasta is it made of? …):
1 Back foot comes up to the front one and then retreats: advances to back
2. Request from front retreats backwards and the other moves: backward to advance
3. Normal change
4. Change of guard and direction: go backwards, turn and continue
5. Mirror work (front and side to camera)

Looking forward to next Saturday to learn more. Thanks for these Virtual Karate initiatives in this time of pandemic.
