ADAPTED KARATE, ELA AND OTHER DISEASES

***I am a professional competitor of Karate, a discipline I have been practicing since I was 6 years old and now I 45 years old. Nowadays, I practice Adapted Karate in wheelchair due to an accident that I suffered in 2005 and other diseases which have degenerated my health gradually.

The most commonly developed diseases are primary lateral sclerosis (EDS), degenerative pyramidal syndrome, generalized epilepsy, spinal injury at the lumbar level L3-L4-L5-S1, two lumbar-level surgeries by spiny process laminillas fracture, anteriolitesis, nerve compression, herniated discs, placement of prostheses in lumbar vertebrae, left side mecial sclerosis, subcortical cortico brain atrophy with bilateral ventricular rating, cerebral infarction , cerebral parenquemia, surgery for placing a filter in inferior venae cavae, Multifragmented fracture nose surgery, meniscopaty knee surgery, deep thrombosis vein in the right leg, chronic venous insufficiency in both legs, left renal agenesis, right renal lithiasis, high blood pressure, bronchial asthma, intestinal gastritis, in 2016-2017 I was in a coma for three episodes of convulsive controlled seizures while in a coma, intubated in intensive care three times, in less than a year, June, September and December.

GLOBAL INCLUSIVE KARATE DISSEMINATION

I find it great that Inclusive Karate is being disseminated globally as it is well known to all of us who have been in this wonderful discipline for years that Para-Karate was only known in continents such as Europe and Asia, and was called Handi Karate.

I speak on this side of the American continent, from Mexico, since at the international level has very little impact the Adapted Karate since it began to integrate within competitions internationally and worldwide, if I am not mistaken in the World Championship in Madrid in 2018 where it was the first time that countries of the American continent participated.

KARATE IS ONLY ONE, BUT THERE IS REAL DISCRIMINATION IN THIS INCLUSIVE SPORT

I mention in my publications that Karate-Do is only one and that is the true essence of Karate-Do. However, there is still a lot of discrimination against us people with disabilities, as they do not take us into account at all events both internationally and globally and there should be equality and equity in that regard since we are not different, we are all equal and we are worth the same.

RIGHTS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

This is where I wonder where the rights of people with disabilities lie. I wish everyone was aware and awareness that everyone knows that we also exist and have the same rights as Karate’s conventional competitors and not only in sport but in all aspects of life.

Apart from my passion which is Karate Do and inclusive sport I have other hobbies like drawing and painting which is my professional career. Everything that has to do with art I am passionate about, I love music both listening to it and singing, dancing (still in wheelchair), cinema (I no longer go but nowadays you can watch movies through the internet).

THERE ARE NO IMPOSSIBLES, WHAT I PROPOSE I GET

For me there are no impossible and everything I set out to do. In my vocabulary there are no words “I can’t” or “no.” My thought is also “instead of worrying, you better take care of me.”

I have work which allows me to survive in this world, although it is not financially well paid because I have to manage to get ahead because of the disabilities I have. My job is to help the population get jobs, serving people with disabilities, older adults and vulnerable populations. I like to help and support others.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY

Despite the adversity there is nothing to stop me from being as I want to be, to do what I like the most and I have had to adapt to my new condition of life.

Family is a key point in every human being regardless of the condition you have, it is the engine that makes you wake up every day with an illusion and dreams to fulfill. The family is always there at all times good or bad, it is something that moves the world as well as love, faith, dreams and illusions.

I hope with these brushstrokes to give an idea of what my life is like. It hasn’t been an easy road at all as most of the time I live in hospitals.

DESPITE THE DOCTORS, I’VE NEVER STOPPED PLAYING SPORTS

It should be clarified that despite the medical forecasts against it, I have never stopped doing sports, nor have I stopped training Karate Do, now in another modality with wheelchair, I began to compete at the delegateal, regional, state, national, international and worldwide level, achieving good results, such as being National Champion of Para-Karate Men’s Wheelchair 2018 , representing Mexico, thus getting a place within the Mexican national team of Karate and Para-karate, to represent my country in the XXXII Pan American Karate Senior Championship and II Para-Panamericano Para-Karate 2018 Championship Santiago, Chile 2018.

This last championship that took place in June 2018 in Santiago, Chile, was the only Mexican to win the gold medal, first place, and I had the Mexican national anthem played on Chilean lands in Para-Karate, male wheelchair.

FIRST PARTICIPATION AND HISTORICAL RESULTS

True, it was Mexico’s first participation in a Para-Pan american event, and I made history as the first Mexican to win a gold medal in this sport, as well as I made history among the most outstanding athletes of Mexico and within Karate Do in its entire history 60 years.

With that achievement I got the direct pass to the 24th Karate World Championship Madrid 2018 Male Wheelchair, last 6-11 November 2018, being in the top 10 in the world getting the 5th place in my category and the best score of the entire Mexican delegation, both conventional competitors and Para- Karate.

In January 2019 I competed in the State and National Selective Mexico City 2019 and the National Karate-Do Championship, representing Mexico City, remaining as National Champion in the men’s wheelchair modality, as well as Mexican national team of Para-Karate, to represent our country in the XXXIII Pan American Championschip Panama Senior 2019 and III Para-Panamericano Para-Karate Championschip , Panama 2019 which was held from 18 to 23 March 2019 in Panama City, obtaining second place, silver medal.

In January 2020 I competed in the National and State Karate-Do Championships, in Oaxtepec Morelos, becoming national champion in the men’s wheelchair, first place, gold medal.

COSTA RICA PANAMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2020

During the month of March I participated in the National Karate-Do Championships, National Para-Karate Championship and national selective to represent Mexico in the next XXXIV Pan American Championship Senior, Costa Rica 2020, IV Para-Panamericano Para-Karate Championschip, San José, Costa Rica 2020 that had to be held from May 25 to 31, 2020 in the city of Costa Rica but by the world virus had to be canceled. With this result he would seek the qualification to the 25th Karate World Championship Dubai 2020 Men’s Wheelchair.

In these years I have also obtained symbolic recognitions by the AKCDMX (Association of Karate and Related Martial Arts of Mexico City) being among the best athletes of Mexico City within the Karate-Do 2018, National Prize 2018 by FEMEKA (Mexican Karate Federation) to the best athletes of Mexico within karate-Do internationally and internationally , symbolic recognitions by the AKCDMX (Association of Karate and Related Martial Arts of Mexico City) being among the best athletes of Mexico City within the Karate-Do 2019, national award 2019 by FEMEKA (Mexican Karate Federation) to the best athletes of Mexico within Karate-Do internationally.

Despite the cancellation of the XXXIV Pan American Championschip Senior and IV Para-PanAmericano Para-Karate Championschip, San Jose, Costa Rica 2020, I will continue my preparation and work from home for the pandemic that was presented worldwide, hoping that soon there will be a solution and everyone in the world will be well, sent them a very big hug wishing them all the best from Mexico***
