HIS ONCOLOGIST TOLD HIM THAT THANKS TO THE PARA-KARATE HIS RECOVERY WAS BETTER ✳️ From Madrid, Spain, think of a loving, positive, talkative person, with travel, musical curiosity… he has also just passed his EvAU exams (access to the university) excellently without missing, despite his studies, to a single Para-Karate training or any competition… That, among many other qualities, is Cris.

My name is Cristina Nuero Gutiérrez, I am 17 years old and I have practiced Para-Karate for a year, but Karate since I was 6 years old and my style is SHOTOKAN.

AFTER A BRAIN TUMOR AND SEVERAL OPERATIONS…

When I was 8 years old, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor that caused hydrocephalus and diverted one eye. I had two operations: the first was an emergency to put on a valve because the intracranial pressure I had was very dangerous; The second operation was to try to remove the tumor but, after 9 hours in the operating room, they could not remove it and after spending several days in the ICU, the oncologist started treating me and gave me 25 sessions of radiotherapy. They also operated twice on strabismus and in September they will do a third to try to finish focusing my eye. I still have quite a few reviews pending at the hospital.

I HAVE IMPROVED MOBILITY AND COORDINATION

Karate has helped me a lot in my recovery because I lost a lot of coordination and I left the hospital stiff as a stick, almost without mobility, even my oncologist has told me that I have recovered more than he expected and it was all thanks to Karate.

Although fortunately I am quite well, all this has left me sequels and gave me 33% of physical disability, although it also affected my memory and some other things. Encouraged by my Sensei Tomás Herrero I now practice Para-Karate.

I GAMES FOR INCLUSION OF THE COMMUNITY OF MADRID

My first experience was in the I Parainclusive Games of the Community of Madrid, where I participated with my twin sister Nuria who does not have any disability, has been doing karate with me since I was 6 years old and is a 1st dan black belt, like me. There I met some of my colleagues and my coach Marcelino, and I plan to participate again in the II Games that will be held this September 2019.

XI BERA BERA MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPIONSHIP FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

My second experience was the XI International Bera Bera Martial Arts Championship for people with disabilities in Donosti, which was unforgettable and I would love to repeat every year.

I also participated in the Madrid Championship in December, which was a qualifier for the Spanish one, and I was runner-up, although I was finally unable to attend the Spanish one because I was a minor, and this year I competed again, being the champion.

I GOT THE BLACK BELT

In March I passed the black belt exam and I have also participated in several trophies of the Madrid Federation where I have also managed to get on the podium. At the moment, this is my entire sports career in Para-Karate.

OPEN TRAININGS IN THE MADRILE FEDERATION OF KARATE

I am very happy to practice this sport that I love and where I have met many new friends. When there are training sessions in the Madrid Federation I am looking forward to going because I have a great time since Marcelino makes them very fun.

With a lot of work and also a lot of effort you can achieve everything you set your mind to. Having a disability doesn’t stop you from doing what you love ***
